We're on our way
112% towards my goal!
Scroll to the bottom for my blog
On June 5th I'm getting on my bicycle and riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles 545 miles, to help fight Aids.
In 1995 my brother, Mike died from Aids. I am doing this, so that no other family has to go through what my family went through.
The participant requirment is $3,000. I plan on raising that $3,000 and I also plan on raising awareness. In order to do that, I'm asking 3,000 people to send me, just ONE dollar.
In todays economy, it's tough to give, but if everyone gives a little, the end result is huge. This is why I'm asking for just ONE dollar from 3,000 people.
I can't do this alone, but WE can do this together!
Mail ONE dollar donations to :
712 Bancroft Rd #158
Walnut Creek, CA 94598
Checks made payable to "Aids LifeCycle"
MY GOAL is to receive $1 from 3,000 people
So far, I have received donations from 3350 people 112%
My deepest and most sincere thanks to the following, for helping me reach my goal with their donations! I could NOT have done this without your support. THANK YOU!

Today while riding up Mt. Diablo i got word that the News story about One Ride One Dollar made it to the home page of Yahoo News!!!
It was front page Yahoo News! AWESOME!!
The messages that started rolling in were great and there were TONS of em.
As a result of the story on Yahoo News The views of the video we made for my brother (one Ride one Dollar) went up a thousand in 24 hours. The story has been re posted from Yahoo OVER 984 times!! and the donations started filling the PO Box.
It has been so incredible!!!
I also got a tip from a reliable source that they are going to play the CBS Channel 5 news clip in Camp on the ride...Wow!
Thanks to Ann Notarangelo and her awesome camera man John for the GREAT job on the news story.
NOW... EVERYBODY Send it to ELLEN. lets get on the Ellen show and REALLY raise awareness for AIDS!
I made it!!
We made it!! WE reached the ambitious goals i set for myself for the AIDS Life Cycle Ride.
More than 4,000 views of the video about my brother, creating AWARENESS!!
More than 3,000 INDIVIDUAL donations of ONE dollar or more!!!
More than SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS raised!!!
THANK YOU EVERYBODY!!! YOU made this happen! This id NOT about me it's about all of YOU who care enough to help change the world.
Tonight my news segment was on at 11:00pm. It was a good story, done very well By Ann and her husband John, although i hate hearing my voice and i am not big on being on TV. It was for a GREAT cause and the story will generate more funds for HIV and AIDS
Thanks to Ann Notarangelo and CBS for caring enough to do this story.
Today was a nervous kind of day.
I was filmed in a story segment for CBS KPIX Channel 5.
The story was about why I am riding the AIDS Life cycle Ride and about my one dollar one ride fund raising.
I blubbered through the thing like a baby! then we went up to Mt. Diablo where they filmed me riding my bike.
It should be a great story put together by the awesome Ann Notarangelo and her camera man husband John. This will air on Friday May 6th on the 11:00 P.M. news on Kpix Channel 5 CBS
May 1st Happy Birthday Stuart!!
Hapy Birthday Stuart now lets go ride up Mt.Diablo AGAIN!!! we did and it was a great ride!
Racked up a lot of miles this past weekend.
Took off early for a long ride through Clayton and up over the back side of Mt. Diablo on Morgan Territory Road, what a pretty ride that was on Morgan Territory, all shady with beautiful trees and a creek flowing. Once we got to the top it was a different story. VERY Windy!!! there was a looong fast down hill that was a little scary then there we were ... out in the middle of nowhere! Long ride.
April 25 Incredible Support!!!
Today, after four months of fundraising I recieved two INCREDIBLE donations.
My cousin Nancy, who has been the most awesome support in this "one ride one dollar" fundraising, never gives up. She continues to support me and post my video, and after four months of Nancy's never ending support, one of her friends saw my video and made an incredible, sizeable donation to my AIDS Life Cycle Bike Ride.
Thank you so much Nancy and THANK YOU Diane, your support is so important to me and so many others.
I also recived a donation from a friend who explained to her grand daughter (who is probably 4 or 5), that My brother is in heaven and that i am riding my bike for him because he was sick. The little girl wanted to give me a dollar and ride her pink Barbie bike with me. Thank you Kristen and Makayla.
These are just two of MANY MANY incredible donations,
Thank you to EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has supported me and to everyone who continues to support me. I am the luckiest guy to have awesome friends and support like this. I am getting closer to my goal.
THANK YOU ALL!!!!
EARLY day! Up at 4:00 A.M, ate my frozen waffles and then packed up the bike and headed for San Raphael for a training ride.
It was called "Day on the Ride" and it was an actual AIDS Life Cycle supported training ride. The ride was meant to be set up like an actual day on the "real" ride. 300 riders today, with all the pit stops and lunch stop and even pasta dinner at the end of the day :o) Yum!
I even got to ride a while with the CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation who actually knew who i was because of my "one ride one dollar" thing.
The ride was 65 miles with lots of (unpleasant) hills. However, the scenery was BEAUTIFUL with tons of green hills and lots of cows.
We were riding waaaaay out in the middle of no where and all of the sudden there were a couple big trucks seemingly out of place, parked on the road by a big field. Way off in the field they were filming something with a guy dressed up like a farmer and a few black and white cows hanging around him.Maybe one of those California Cheeses commercials with the "happy cows" Big lights and equipment... Lights Camera, Action!!! It was cool to see!
The ride was good, but tiring, probably due to the 4:00 A.M. wake up call :o/
On the way home i fell asleep in the van and had a little dream about a puppy :o) then was rudley awakend by a Traffic jam! (i wasn't driving) Showered and took off to Benica for the BCBC Boat club Easter dinner which was really GREAT!
Exhausted i made it home and to bed by 11:00P.M.
It was a GREAT weekend, hope ya had a Happy Easter.
Rode up Mt. Diablo after work today and ran into a film crew up on the mountain filming a Jeep Commercial. It was really cool to watch as they filmed.
25 miles on my bike and then i showerd and went to Taco Tuesday. An old friend of mine was eating dinner there with her son and boyfriend. She has been a great friend for more than 30 years, So I decided to pay for their dinner just to do someting nice for them.
Next thing i knew her son brought $100.00 in and handed it to me for my bike ride from them!!! OMG I was shocked! THAT was so nice!
People are so nice! especially my friends :o)
Took off today for a 85 mile Bike ride from Concord through Pleasanthill, Martinez, over the Benica Bridge into Benica, Fairfield, Cordelia. We stopped at the Jelly Belly factory where we scored a great deal on some Jelly Belly bike jerseys. Then on to Susuin and back home. We felt good when we got back so we added miles until our ride total was 100 MILES!!!! Woo Hoo!
Great ride, felt great afterwards (except my rear was a little sore)
I still need about 400 more donations before i reach my goal! :o/
Today I rode about 41 miles including up Mt. Diablo. It was a tough ride up due to a spin class i took a few days before. Spin classes are not for me!
That woman about killed me in that class!!!
We took a fast ride out to Danville for breakfast at Chow's then a quick ride home to get ready for the Ride In Fund raiser.
The Ride In fund raiser went GREAT!!!! we raised a lot of money and it was a really fun time!!
Long rides coming up!
LOOOOONG Ride today! We rode 80 miles from here to there to everywhere!! including some pretty wicked hills that seem to go on forever. All in all it was a GREAT ride and i felt good aftewards, not too tired and not sore YAY!!
This saturday we head up Mt.Diablo (with spare tubes this time) ;o)
and a fundraiser for Me, Stuart, Jon, Karl and Bob at 1220 on Sunday with lots of GREAT raffle prizes...
About 900 more donations to go before i reach my goal.
Great day for a ride today. Temps in the 80's, not a cloud in the sky.
I took off after work and headed to Mt. Diablo. Started riding up the mountain and it was so pretty. It was warm but not too warm, very quiet, water flowing in the creeks and lots of animals running around. I even passed two riders on my way UP which is usually the other way around, riders passing me.
I got to the ranger's station and took a little rest before turning around and heading back down the mountain.
About a mile down i pulled off the road at a switchback to look at a waterfall and BAM!!!!! Flat Tire! and.... no spare tube :o/
I called a couple people and finally reached Good ol' Stuart who left the gym to come up and get me. I walked my bike for about a mile until Stuart reached me up on the mountain. Loaded up the bike and away we went, straight to the bike store. I let the guy there change the tube (because i was lazy) and while pumping it back up.. BAM!!!! Flat! Again.
Tube # 3 is holding so far.
This Saturday's ride is going to be 77 Miles long day... wish me luck!
Pizza Fundraiser update: I got a check in the mail From Rocco's Pizzeria for $339.00 AWESOME!!! Thanks to everyone for coming. Thanks to Lori Myer, my Twirly Girl, for setting it up :o)
Well, I did it! I rode my bike 66 miles today. I went through Concord, WalnutCreek, Danville, Alamo, lafayette, Orinda, Moraga, wind, Rain,Cold (no sun) Hills and we had 3 flat tires (none mine) I did almost get backed over by the secret service vehicle. They were clearing the Rising Loafer in Danville for some "big Wig" to show up for breakfast. The wouldn't say who though. I aske "whos here?" the reply " No ones here sir, move along" I just laughed.
Soon as the riding day finally eneded the sun came out!!! Oh well :o)
And And And... My video passed the 4,000 mark for views on Youtube.... YAY! awesome!
Today is the exact day, sixteen years ago that my brother Mike died of AIDS. I thank everybody who has supported me in my efforts to fight AIDS so that no other person will have to suffer this terrible disease.
It is awesome to know that because of my brother's memory so many good things have happend.
60 mile ride planned for Sunday... wish me luck :o)
OH... I guess i can thank Mike for my sore rear end! :o/
YAY!!!! today the Concord Transcript ran the story of me doing the AIDS Life Cycle Ride and how I am trying to get 3,000 donations. Here's the link if ya wanna check it out. http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_17682568?IADID=Search-www.contracostatimes.com-www.contracostatimes.com&nclick_check=1
And tonight is the big Pizza Fundraisers at Rocco's Pizza in WalnutCreek!
Hopefully those dollars will start rolling in.
Oh Ya, And yesterday i got this little white box in the mail, No return address on it. I carefully opened it and there were ten dollar bills Carefully folded into the most BEAUTIFUL hearts you've ever seen. I was AMAZED!!! It was just unbelieveable to open that box and see those dollars folded origami style into BEAUTIFUL, detailed hearts. No note inside. So THANK YOU to whoever sent that box of hearts, It was VERY special. I sure would love to know who did it so I can thank them personally.
We rode abot 44 miles today. It was a very hard, sad ride as we lost our very best friend Baily yesterday. He was with us fourteen years and was absolutely the VERY BEST dog any one could ever wish for. The weather was gray and cool and it was just a depressing day.
Our plan was set for 6o miles but our hearts were not in it after yesterday so we cut it short :o/
The donatins are still coming in at a trickle. I always fear that one day I will go to the mailbox and there won't ba an envelope. I hope that does not happen.
I am working hard on this and I plan to succeed!
Thanks to all of you of course, Thank you.
We rode our bikes 51 miles today. It was an awseome day for a ride.
Tired but not too tired, ready to go again!!! Great ride.
Maybe 60 miles next weekend??? who knows?
Long ride today, 45.something miles.
from concord to lafayette to Orinda to Elsobrante and back. It was a great day for a ride, sunny and cool, beautiful gree hills.
Oh Ya, there was One big wicked steep hill but i made it to the top :o) Yay!
Racking up the miles!!!
Still not quite half way to my goal of 3,000 donations though :o(
I gotta do something about that !
Spread the word for me, thanks.
Encounter with an idiot!!
I had someone indicate to me that they would NOT donate ONE dollar to my AIDS Life Cycle Ride because... (get this) A pine tree where i work, drops pine needles on her vehicle, and she wants me to have the branches cut. Brilliant!!! People are dying and this selfish person feels that she cannot help because there are pine needles dropping on her vehicle! Oh it is so sad the way people think.
I donated a dollar in her name (after my blood stopped boiling)
Ya gotta love the thought process in some people!!!
Just smile and be glad it in't you.
After getting back from a weekend in LA and seeing Mt.Diablo covered with snow I decided to take a ride. I wanted to ride my bike up Mt. Diablo and get a picture of me and my bike in the snow.
Headed out towards Walnutcreek and when i got to Northgate Rd. the traffic was backed up for miles. I passed about a hundred vehicles waiting to get in Mt. Diablo State Park. It was a beautiful day the sun was shining and the ride up was hard and warm. I got all the way to the ranger's Station and the snow was higher (bummer). Reminding myself that i had bowling in a few hours, i didn't want to "over do" and let my bowling team down (great excuse) so I turned around and headed back down the mountain. The ride down was COLD. there were still even more vehicles waiting to get in and some BRILLIANT Girl Scouts who set up their cookie stand on the corner. All in all it was a tiring but great climb on a beautiful day. :o) Wish you were there.
Today (Valentines Day) i recieved an awesome message with a very large donation to this bike ride. The message was on a homemade red and pink heart. It reads, "16 X 4 X 3
a dollar for the number of valentine days without your brother as a Valentine X the four members of our family who never had the chance to love him X the three rides you have done in his name." On the other side it reads, Happy Valentines Day Uncle Dan! Love Ryan, Shay, Steph and Mike xo"
What an incredible message and GENEROUS donation!!! So caring and so thoughtful. It's things like this that make this ride better than one could ever expect.
I truly appreciate everybody's support and caring in this big adventure and I remind all of you, I could never do this alone. This is OUR ride, not MY ride. I couldn't do it without YOU! Thank you.
Today is a BIG day for me!
One of my goals when i started this "adventure" was to make Three-Thousand people aware, and I successfully achieved goal that last night. I reached THREE THOUSAND views of my video on Youtube!!!!! YAY for me!! I did it!!! i made Three-thousand people aware!! That was ONE of my goals and I made it!
NOW, I shall continue working HARD on my second to last goal, which is reaching THREE-THOUSAND DONATIONS! Right now I only have about one thousand donations, So i need TWO Thousand more before May!!! Please help if you can by sending in your donation and spreading the word. One envelope, one satmp, one dollar!! Just one is all it takes! more is good, but one is good also.
So...Just got in from a 37 mile bike ride and I feel GREAT!!!. It was a really beautiful day out there for a ride, it felt like spring.
Hope the ride doesn't catch up with me and I do Ok bowling tonight :o)
Don't forget PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE... send your donation in!! did i say PLEASE? :o)
Well, I kinda new "it" would happen and i thought i would be ready for it. "it" did happen, and i wasn't ready for it:o(
I have recieved a few very negative messages about my video from some kind of awfully mean spirited people.
Now I know this shouldn't bother me but i have to say, it did bother me. Some people can be very mean for no apparent reason and that is just very sad.
Like I said I knew this would likeley happen with so much exposure to the video and the topic of AIDS. I guess it's to be expected in the world today.
But, after the nasty comments.... it sure helps to look at how many really AWESOME people are supporting me and how many people really care. It truly is incredible the amount support i have gotten so far.
So thanks to all of you really caring and generous people who have posted my video and sent in a dollar or more, and just had some really encouraging things to say. Without YOU i could not do this.
TOGETHER, WE are doing this, not just me, but WE.
Thanks for all the positive support.
January 15th first training ride
1st "Official" training ride from Concord to Danville about 29 miles.
No hills yet but it was cold. We rode with an long time AIDS Ride friend Sue Lackey. We rode to Danville, turned arund and headed back stopping at The Hickory Pit in Walnut Creek to see my friend Erin Larkin and get some breakfast/lunch, then headed home.
all is well!
Donations are coming in via mail about nine or ten per day give or take. I'm always hoping to find the mailbox Bulging with envelopes but no such luck yet.
There are some really nice notes that have come with some of the donations.
I really appreciate how much people really care about the ride and the nice things being written about the video and my brother Mike. Thanks
January 10th Launch Video
On January 10th is the actual date we launched the video, it was pretty late at night, I think around 10:30ish within ten minutes i recieved a Very large donation, (Thanks Aunt Suzy)
after that i was so nervous to watch the mail box to see if the video really worked, It did, as mail started coming in in a trickle. It was exciting but still made me nervous when i would go to the mail box.
The video was made with no script. It was just me talking and trying to remember to get all the information right.
The video will not play in some countries due to the copy right of the Michael Jackson song playing during the pictures part.
