I'm Riding to end AIDS.
From June 2-8, 2013, I'm bicycling in the AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with AIDS.
Admittedly, I got into this on a whim thinking a bike ride between two of my favorite cities in sunny California would be an incredible adventure. Of course this is true but as the traning rides have progressed over the last couple months and I've educated myself on the origins and politics surrounding the epidemic of AIDS, I've discovered how the AIDS/LifeCycle and the devistation AIDS has been causing in our world since the late 1950s are intimitely connected.
The physical challenge this ride poses is enormous and has required every ounce of my strength and bravery to even attempt it. With 2500 other riders, many of whom have been diagnosed HIV positive, I'm humbled even to be among their ranks.
When I tell people "I'm riding to end AIDS," I've noticed how queezy a conversation about AIDS can be. Most would rather avoid the subject altogether out of ignorance or prejudice or fear. What remains is that AIDS is claming the lives of millions every year and the victims of this baffling syndrome endure the greatest challenge of their lives to attempt to overcome it.
As a peaceful demonstration and a challenge of a lifetime, I'm riding.
Thank you for your generocity, sympathy, and encouragement to complete on this very special bike ride.
