I'm Riding to End AIDS

My name is Ken Decroo. From June 6 - 12, 2010, I will be supporting bicyclists in AIDS/LifeCycle as roadie (#9200). It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise awareness and money that will make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

My wife Tammy and I have been cyclists in this event two times (ALC6 and ALC7). While this ride is a challenge to us as cyclists, the spirit of this ride and this community on wheels has a life changing effect on those who accept the challenge. This year I would like to experience ALC 9 from a different prespective by helping behind the scenes as a member of the Moto Safety Team instead of riding. I will be able to combine two of my passions, cycling and motorcycling to help in this important cause. We will keep riding as long as people suffer from HIV/AIDS.

I am an educator by trade. I just retired from working with "at-risk" students as the Principal of Citrus Continuation High School in Fontana Unified School District. Now I work as a consultant focusing on helping students in danger of dropping out of school. There is nothing I would rather do than work with young people. Over the years they have taught me to never take myself too seriously and to believe in them. They have given me a great gift.... PURPOSE.

I want the students I work with to share in the benefits of the prevention and educational programs that we are supporting. It is alarming to see the growning numbers of newly HIV infected young people under the age of 25. I will support this ride for as long as it takes to stop this frightening trend.

I am dedicating this ride to all my students past and present, to all those suffering from the complications of HIV/AIDS, and particularly to my friends, Hunt Busnell, who lost his battle with AIDS several years ago and, Kevin, who after a couragous fight sadly passed two years ago.

Please support our effort.

This journey will help me raise money for the San Francisco Aids Foundation. Please help me by giving what you can. We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past.

LA Roadie Training
Tammy and I just got back from the LA Roadie Training day. It was great seeing old friends and making new ones.
I met with some of the Moto Safety crew
that I will be working with this summer including our Captain. We discussed what a responsible position we are holding. We protect all 2,500 cyclists as they pedal the 545 plus miles from SF to LA.I was happy to put faces to many of the names I have been communicating with. Once again I was struck by how accepting and welcoming the ALC community is and thought how wonderful it would be if our life outside this ride was so supportive and kind. I am proud to be part of this great community that is commited to ending AIDS/HIV.

Two Wheels
I have spent the winter training on my bicycle in the hills of the San Bernardino mountains and taking trips on my BMW F 650 GS motorcycle. We've had a hard winter here in the Southland which has made riding a challenge.
While I'm riding on either my bicycle or my motorcycle I think about the important work we are preparing ourselves for this summer. We will raise much needed money to help those suffering from HIV/AIDS. But just as importantly we will raise the awareness of this terrible disease as we journey down from San Fransico to LA on two wheels.
This year, I'll be doing this on my Motorcycle instead of my bicycle. It will be my responsiblity as a member of the Moto Safety Crew to make sure the cyclists are supported and safe.
The bonus in this grand adventure is I will get to, once again, experience this beautiful State of ours from two wheels as part of the warm and loving ALC community. And I will have time to think as the landscape intimately unfolds before me.
At the end of the day, I think best when I'm on two wheels. :-)

Motorcycle Safety
I have signed up for the Moto Safety team (Roadie 9200) this year. I was a cyclist for ALC 6(4681-cyclist) and ALC7(5219-cyclist)...I didn't ride in ALC 8 (though I fundraised #4045 - cyclist) last year because I retired as a high school principal and went on holiday. I've been riding my BMW F650GS motorcycle around the USA and Mexico. While I had a wonderful time adventure motorcycling and cycling these last several months, I very much missed the ALC community.
My wife, Tammy, and I were camping in a KOA somewhere in North Carolina watching TV while in the camp store when the local news covered day 3 of ALC8. We looked into each other's eyes and both knew, without saying it aloud, that we would never miss another ALC.
My passions are motorcycles and cycling. Tammy and I loved being part of a community dedicated to helping put an end to HIV/AIDS. We have lost 4 very dear friends. I will always be grateful to the SF AIDS Foundation. They made a huge difference in the the quality of our friends lives; especially as they neared the end. They are also helping a friend of ours who is living with AIDS as I write this.
I will continue to cycle and Roadie in this great event there is no need to.....
Warm regards, Ken
