John PC Rides Again! AIDS/Lifecycle IX
I'm Riding to End AIDS and to Help People Trying to Live with It. From June 6-12, 2010, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle. It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS. As you may know, the day after Thanksgiving my Mom and I were hit head on in a auto collision in California that injured us both seriously and ultimately took her life. I thought that for another year I wouldn't be able to participate in Lifecycle because of injury--I'd broken my hand the spring of 2009. But as I healed physically and emotionally I thought, "What better way to get me out of my head and my house than to do something like this to help people?" What better way to get on board with life? In 2007 I completed five days and rode most of the distance on the others. In 2008 I completed every day's ride despite the abject fear that shows in my face the day the ride began. My experience is that of all the 2000 riders: pushing through fear, persistence, health, and community--just what's needed to end AIDS. The ride is unique as a fundraising event as the sponsors and directors are the beneficiary organizations. They've cut out the middle-man. They have an amazing record for a high rate of service squeezed out of every dollar raised and keeping their fundraising costs minimal as you can see from the financial information at their web sites. We know financial times are hard. I know they're hard for you. Imagine how hard it is for organizations suffering from record government cuts in their programs to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. And imagine the desperation of people who because of illness can't afford life-saving medications or even the costs of day to day survival. Help me support the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Pangaea World AIDS Foundation by giving what you can. Every donation helps, small or large, and the need is great. I'm making the effort to raise funds at my own expense, with my own equipment, on my own time. Please support me by giving something, whatever you can--as much as you can. I hope you'll give a lot more, but at least give $10.00. Please. The cost of a couple of lattes. And remember, your donation is tax deductible: who do you trust to allocate your money wisely? We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past.
