I originally decided to do the ride as a personal challenge for myself. I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and take on a challenge that seemed impossible. I did not even own a bike at the time but thanks to a friend and a group of very generous strangers my bike now has several thousand miles on it!
As far as I knew I didn not know anyone who was affected by HIV+/AIDS but as soon as I started sharing what I was up to, people started telling me about their friends or relatives who were positive or had died of AIDS. Several long-time friends even came out to me revealing their own HIV+ statuses. I soon realized that this disease affects us all, whether we are aware of it or not.
Recently a good friend called me and through his tears told me he had just found out he was HIV+. He said I was the first person he told and he knew I would understand because I have done the ride. Another friend recently lost his health insurance and called me freaking out because his meds cost over $900 a month. Shortly after that, I read on the San Francisco AIDS Foundation website that it costs around $10,000 a year to treat one HIV+ person.
When I first registered to do this ride ten years ago, I simply was not aware of all the ways AIDS had touched my life, now I have a million reasons why I ride. It is not about me anymore. It has become so much bigger than me. Since starting Team Colorado with a couple friends, we have raised over $1 million for the SFAF and the LA Center, joining thousands from across Colorado and California and all over the world in an effort to end AIDS.
A huge THANK YOU to all my donors and faithful supporters over the years who have made such an incredible journey possible! Working together we are proving that one person can do much and make a difference, but supporting each other together we can do even more than we ever could imagine and change the world.
