Thank you for joining me in this cause for the third time!
I'm currently going through the third phase of the medical school application process, flying here and there to put on my suit for a few hours and talk to actors pretending to be patients, and spending a lot of time waiting for responses to come in. So far I've gotten into UNC Chapel Hill and UC Davis!
Anyway, I'm still keeping my feet in the HIV world by helping run the Berkeley needle exchange (NEED) and attending cool conferences like the 2018 national Harm Reduction Conference in New Orleans and the recent HIV Cure Summit at UCSF Mission Bay. These two issues, opioid overdose and HIV, which affect a vast swath of Americans, are inextricably intertwined. We have the potential to resolve them both in my lifetime; doing so will require an integrated approach that fights on both fronts at once. By providing key services like HIV prevention and treatment, access to clinical trials on a vaccine/cure, and medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder (eg buprenorphine [Suboxone/Subutex] or methadone, aka opioid antagonist therapy), the SF AIDS Foundation and LA Gay and Lesbian Center are leading this fight.
In the meantime I'm managing the service department at Bikes on Solano in Albany, CA. In June I'll again be putting those mechanical skills to work by wrenching for the annual AIDS LifeCycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and I need your support. Please donate if you can!
