During the first week of June I will be riding my bicycle 545 miles from San Francisco to LA in an effort to raise funds for those affected by HIV & AIDS. I won't be doing it alone. I will be joined by about 2400 other riders, over 500 "Roadies" (the amazing volunteers who support the ride) and the hard working staff from AIDS Lifecycle, LA Gay & Lesbian Center and SF Aids Foundation.
Why do I ride? It's an amazing challenge, physically, mentally and emotionally. I ride because there is still a lot of ignorance and stigma surrounding HIV. For instance, I know man who has been living with HIV for years and relies on the services at the center to stay healthy and free from opportunistic life threatening illnesses. I ride becase a special person I knew gave up hope that a cure would ever be found; he stopped taking his medication which caused a life threatening condition which took his life. He was 32.
