Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be a superhero. I wanted powers like superhuman strength and the ability to fly, I wanted to beat up the bad guys but most of all I wanted to save lives. Before moving to San Francisco, like many, my knowledge of HIV and AIDS was very limited. I knew almost nothing other than what was portrayed on TV and in movies, and all the stigmas that went along with it. I definitely did not know the amazing organizations (the real heroes) trying to change all of that nor the 545 mile ride that helps makes what they do possible.
After living here for a few years, I finally decided that I was going to join the ride and help raise money for my brothers and sisters living with HIV and AIDS (superheroes themselves). It was finally my chance to become a superhero and all that came with it, like intense training (and raising lots of money like Batman). Though, just like many superheroes who experience setbacks, my body had other plans. I was diagnosed with cancer in late 2013 and I would also end up losing a kidney after several surgeries. And just like those superheroes, I am ready to persevere. So this year, I will be finally be able to try to be the superhero I’ve always wanted to be. I will be able to clear large hills (with a lot of pedaling because they are really big and that stuff is hard, y’all!), I will be able to fly (downhill but not too fast because that’s pretty scary stuff), but most of all I will be able to help save lives.
Superheroes can’t do it alone, they need support, sidekicks, people to cheer them on, as well as people to pay for all their stuff (not everyone has crazy amounts of money like Bruce Wayne). That’s where we all come in, let’s say ALC is Batman (I sure am using Batman a lot in this thing…), I’ll be Robin (I think I’d look good in yellow tights), and I am asking you all to help support us both by being Wayne Corp and help Batman do all the amazing stuff it does. If you are able to, please consider making a donation to this amazing cause and let’s help end HIV and AIDS.
Let's save some lives, people!!
