This year's adventure is slightly different ....
and involves cycling 877km from San Francisco to Los Angeles. It's not a race or a luxury cycle holiday, it is a personal challenge I have wanted to do for a few years now and 2017 is the year!
Between 4 and 10 June 2016, I will join over 3,000 Cyclists, Roadies and Virtual Cyclists in the AIDS/LifeCycle (ALC) to raise funds and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Why this ride? My answer may surprise you.... HIV/AIDS is rarely spoken about in Australia but it's something that has been in my life from a very young age. Growing up in South Africa, where it is estimated 20% of the population lives with HIV/AIDS, it was no surprise that HIV/AIDS touched my family and friends directly. As a child I witnessed first-hand what happens to a person infected by HIV/AIDS. Over 7 years I watched a healthy vibrant man decline to a frail shadow of himself. Sadly, he passed away well before his time. Not only did we lose a dear family friend but my uncle lost his long-term partner. I was only 14 when this happened but I will NEVER forget the pain and suffering I saw. Sadly, this wasn't the first or the last time HIV/AIDS has affected me... but it doesn't have to be this way for future generations!
Yes, I'm riding in the USA and raising funds for a cause in the US but HIV/AIDS is an international issue and every step towards making HIV/AIDS a thing of the past. Will you support me by making a donation today? EVERY dollar helps!
Thank you, Tash
