For the last 2 years at the start of June, I have spent 7 days riding my bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles on the AIDS Life/Cycle. That's 545 miles / 877 km!
This challenging but inspirational (even life-changing) ride raises money that the San Francisco AIDS foundation and Los Angeles LGBT Center need to do amazing work in reducing new HIV infections and improving quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS.
It's tempting to assume that HIV/AIDS is no longer a huge issue here in the USA. The reality is truly shocking: the need is critical, especially in some disproportionately-affected groups (such as women, people of colour and the trans community) but without these charities very many people would have no access to essential services and support.
Even though we might not be aware of it, we all know people who are affected by HIV, either directly or indirectly, and there is still a huge need* for these charities to support them and also working to prevent new infections so I am excited and proud (and a bit nervous) to ride again this year!
PLEASE HELP me to raise $5,000 by donating as much money as you can!
(Ask your friends and family to help too, sharing the link to this page!)
Thank you so much for donating!
*In the USA alone, of the 1.2 million people who are living with HIV less than half are on treatment (with undetectable viral loads), and 15% are not even aware that they are infected; there were nearly 40,000 new infections here in 2016. It is frightening that young people (aged 13-24) still account for 1 in 5 of those new infections, and HIV has a vastly disproportional impact on women, people of color, gay and bisexual men and trans people.
