This year, for the second time, I'll be riding 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise money for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT center. For the past three years, I've seen my wife Jan do the AIDS Lifecycle ride and have been inspired by her example to do something positive for the AIDS community.
I have several connections with this particular event that resonate.
I've been an avid cyclist for many years, mostly as a racer on the road, in the velodrome, and in cyclocross. These races are generally short, intense and rarely involve back to back days. The ALC ride is a completely different kind of ride, with a week of long, back to back days in the saddle and a rolling community of loving, committed friends.
Another connection is that I am a research scientist who has spent my entire career developing drugs to treat human illnesses of all kinds. Except AIDS. The ALC ride is an opportunity to do something about this terrible disease which still has no cure. Although the treatments for AIDS developed recently have improved patient survival, we can do better, both in terms of developing better drugs and giving patients better access to care. The ALC ride gives me a chance to help.
Finally, I'm a long time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, which welcomes and embraces a diversity of humanity that I treasure, including many friends from the LGBT and kink community which has been so impacted by this disease. This ride is an opportunity for me to give back to my local community.
I've been talking about me, but this note is really about you. I'm just riding a bike, but you can help turn that into something that changes people's lives Last year, AIDS Lifecycle raised over $16 million for the SF AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
